Rug Care & Selection Guide
Everything you need to look after your rug — and choose the right size for your room.
General care
- Sunlight: Limit continuous and direct exposure to sunlight.
- Rotation: Rotate your rug periodically for even wear.
- Loose threads: Trim loose threads carefully with scissors — never pull.
- Furniture protectors: Use protectors under heavy furniture legs to prevent pile from flattening.
- Shedding: Expect natural shedding for the first few months, up to about six. It reduces over time.
- Professional cleaning: Have your rug professionally cleaned every 2–3 years by trusted experts. Ask for a pre-cleaning inspection and a written receipt with a work guarantee.
- Spills: Address spills immediately by blotting with a clean, absorbent cloth. Rinse and dry thoroughly to prevent staining.
- Ventilation: To freshen a rug, turn it upside down and beat it gently in an open space to remove loose yarn and dust.
Vacuuming
Vacuum regularly to remove surface dirt and prevent discoloration.
- Use a low-power setting and avoid a beater brush.
- Canister vacuums, brooms, and hand-held attachments are best.
- Strong-suction vacuums can pull fibres from the base — not recommended.
- Avoid repeated vacuuming across edges and fringes to prevent damage.
Storing rugs safely
- Wrap: Before storing, wrap the rug in plastic or fabric.
- Roll, don't fold: Roll the rug with the front side facing outwards, then cover with cloth.
- Environment: Keep the rolled rug in a dry area with good air circulation; clean the space regularly to deter pests.
- Don't pile items on it: Weight on a stored rug can damage the pile permanently.
Sizing — how to pick the right rug
- Measure first: Note your room's dimensions and any limitations like doorways.
- Go a size larger: A larger rug tends to unify a room and make it feel more cohesive.
- The 18-inch rule: Aim for roughly 18 inches of exposed floor around the perimeter — adjust based on room size and layout.
- Trust your eye: These are guidelines. Experiment until it feels right.
Measuring an abstract-shaped rug
- Consider the useable area: Irregular shapes may not cover the floor uniformly — plan for how it will actually sit.
- Outline the area: Use painter's tape to mark the area you want covered; it helps you visualise footprint and flow.
- Measure length and width: Within the outlined space, take the maximum length and width to arrive at the largest possible dimensions.
How to measure the rug itself
- Stretch the tape from the longest point to the opposite end for maximum length.
- Repeat at the widest part for the width. The two measurements may not be directly opposite each other.
- Think about how the shape complements or contrasts with existing furniture in the room.
